Discount stores will continue to have a lot of joy in 2011. Elevated unemployment and stymied wage growth in the face of high inflation will see belt tightening remaining the order of the day. Larger formats that are not as price competitive as discount stores will probably continue to find the market tough. High food prices will likely continue to put the squeeze on confidence over the rest of the year. However, with organised food retail outlets estimated to make up about half of the market, there is still a lot of room for growth.
