Indian consumers are still largely familiarising themselves with the concept of modern retail, with modern retail accounting for only 9% of overall grocery retail sales, according to BMI estimates. Nonetheless, there are going to be tremendous opportunities for growth given the underdeveloped nature of the Indian MGR sector. Although any liberalisation move in retail foreign direct investments (FDI) is likely to be gradual in nature, the ongoing influx of FDI is inevitable, and should encourage the spread of MGR moving forward.
