If the country's leading low-cost retailer Shoprite was a major player going into the 2008 financial crisis and ensuing 2009 spending lull, it has emerged as probably South Africa's most desirable retail asset over the intervening period. Shoprite's low-cost focus, aided by an excellent distributional network, allowed it to continue churning out neat growth numbers (also aided by a genuinely exciting business outside South Africa where it operates more than 70 stores in wider Sub-Saharan Africa).
