Tesco Leapfrogs Carrefour In South East Asian Battle

With emerging Asian economies presenting a host of exciting opportunities for mass grocery retail (MGR) players, it comes as no surprise that big retail names such as Wal-Mart, Tesco and Carrefour have been eager to expand their presence in these markets. While we have previously singled out Wal-Mart and Tesco as the most well-positioned global retailers in Asia thanks to their growth strategies and massive financial clouts (see 'Wal-Mart And Tesco's Asian Prospects Looking Particularly Bright', April 18), we narrowed our focus on the South East Asian region in this article and aim to assess the respective growth strategies of Tesco and Carrefour in these markets.
