Egypt's Growing Sugar Quandary

It is estimated that Egyptians consume between 30-34kg of sugar a year, importing up to 1mn tonnes of sugar annually. As international prices have risen, due to a convergence of various factors, including increasing demand and lower crop yields owing to environmental condition, domestic prices have been rising along with international ones. In response, the government has launched an incentive plan for sugar crop farmers, raising the prices they pay for cane and beets, and has delayed the planned privatisation of the country's largest sugar companies.
