Eastern Europe Battles Junk
September 2006 | Industry NewsAs students returned to school across Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), Russian and Latvian schoolchildren, at least, will have fewer opportunities to buy soft drinks and many snack foods, banned as junk from school grounds by their national governments. Latvia's ban appears to be the most draconian in the European Union. Beginning November 1, food and soft drinks with high sugar and salt content as well as artificial flavourings will be banned from state-run schools in a move spearheaded by the Ministry of Health.
