Metro Opens Vietnamese Procurement Unit

German retailer Metro has announced the opening of a procurement office in the Vietnamese capital of Ho Chi Minh City in an effort to increase its food supplies from Vietnam. Thus far Metro Group Buying (MGB), the Hong Kong-based central procurement organisation, has focused on sourcing non-food products from the country. However, following strong demand for Vietnamese seafood and fruit and vegetables, Metro has decided to venture into food exports for the first time. Metro was the first foreign distributor to enter the country in 2002, and had the challenge of building a modern supply chain where none existed.
