Milk Consumption Rising, Along With Imports
January 2007 | Industry NewsPeru's economy, now in its ninth year of expansion, is experiencing rising per-capita consumption of most food and drink items, including milk. Although the country's domestic dairy industry continues to develop, it is not yet capable of totally supporting local consumption. Thus, Peru imports more than one-quarter of its milk products, with New Zealand and the EU being the two principal suppliers. The expanding demand, which includes government spending of approximately US$250mn a year on milk and milk products for its food assistance programme, is piquing the interest of US and Canadian livestock and genetics
