WTO Talks Resume In An Effort To Liberalise Food Trade

The WTO has made a last-ditch effort to save its stalled trade talks, appealing to the US and European countries to lower their agricultural barriers in exchange for greater export access to markets in the developing world. Negotiators proposed formulas for cutting tariffs and trade-distorting production subsidies, with this range of tariffs much narrower than in the last round, which ended when the talks collapsed last year. The current global trade talks began in 2001 in Doha, Qatar, with the goal of helping poor countries gain market access for agricultural and industrial products in the developed world, particularly the US
