Government Bans Chemical From Cocoa Farming
February 2008 | Industry NewsThe Nigerian government has banned the use of about 20 chemicals commonly used in cocoa farming, in an effort to comply with European Union quality regulations. This follows a threat by the International Cocoa Organization (ICO) to blacklist beans and other cocoa products from Nigeria due to the prevalence of copper sulphate and other banned chemicals, which are commonly used in Nigeria to preserve beans. Given that Europe is the primary market for Nigerian cocoa products, the government quickly moved to end subsidies for these chemicals and review their use.
