Major Sugar Refinery Starts Production
February 2008 | Company News AlertProduction in Syria's largest sugar refinery has now begun, with an output of 1,000 tonnes a day, and plans to triple output within three months. The al-Wataniyah refinery, located in the Homs region, is the result of a joint venture between Syrian businessman Najib Assaf, Brazilian company Crystalsev and America agri-business conglomerate Cargill. The raw sugar used as an input will be supplied from Brazil by Cargill. Although the refinery is producing only for the domestic market at the moment, once full capacity is reached, the neighbouring markets of Jordan and Lebanon will also be targeted.
