Venezuela Moves Towards State Controlled Food Industry
March 2008 | Industry NewsThe Venezuelan government has taken more steps towards nationalising the country's food industry after periodic shortages of basic food stuffs threatened to undermine President Chavez's popularity. Reports suggest that the state has taken control of one of the country's largest dairy firms, Los Andes. The government is also pressing ahead with its state run distribution system and recently purchased Cealco, a logistics company that packs and distributes frozen and chilled food. These moves take the country further towards a fully state-run food industry; however, reports suggest that the new food distribution outlets are still struggling to meet demand.
