Merger Of Netto And Plus In Doubt

The planned merger of Edeka and Tengelmann's discount operations has been thrown into doubt after the German competition regulator revealed it was inclined to block the deal. The merger agreement, announced in November 2007, would combine Edeka's Netto chain with Tengelmann's Plus network and create the largest discount network in the country. However, with the German regulator sounding fairly adamant that the deal would not be permitted in its current form, very big concessions may be necessary to get the deal approved.
