Government Considers Food Price Caps After Euro Adoption
June 2008 | Industry NewsThe Slovakian government is considering a freeze on food prices when it adopts the euro next year. With euro entry planned for January 2009, the Agriculture Ministry is concerned that retailers will make speculative jumps in food prices and the negative impact this will have on consumers. Under the proposed scheme, prices for 20 staples, including bread, beef, pork, milk, butter, eggs, flour, apples, potatoes and sugar, will be frozen or given a percentage cap on how much prices are allowed to rise.
