Mexico Freezes Food Prices
June 2008 | Industry NewsOn June 19 Mexico became the latest Latin American country to announce a wide-ranging system of price freezes in an attempt to stem rampant food price inflation. The announcement follows similar moves in Venezuela and Ecuador but is perhaps more significant given the centre-right positioning of the current Mexican government. The move has attracted criticism from the World Bank, but the fact that a government which had previously ruled out a return to price controls has felt it necessary to take this step is a sign of how big an issue food prices have become in many emerging
