Meija Dairies-Meiji Seika Merger Talk Builds

Despite a refusal to comment from both parties, a merger between Japanese dairy giant Meiji Dairies and compatriot confectioner Meiji Seika appears imminent, after public broadcaster NHK announced the deal on September 10. Although only conjecture at this stage, the merger - which would create Japan's second largest food company, behind only Ajinomoto Corp, with revenues of JPY1.1trn (US$10.3bn) - appears likely as both companies come under increasing pressure from rising input costs.
