Auchan Targets Further Growth in Maturing Mass Grocery Retail Market

December 2008 | Company News Alert

French retailer Auchan plans to expand its Hungarian operations according to Vilaggazdasag. It is building a new hypermarket in Maglod, a town outside of Budapest, the country's capital. Auchan has invested more than HUF130bn (US$636.43mn) in Hungary since 1996. BMI rates the Hungarian food and drink market as Central and Eastern Europe's most developed. Per capita food consumption of US$2,247 in 2008 shows that the market is reasonably mature and large-scale investment by foreign retailers has benefited a consumer base that is increasingly shopping at hypermarkets. Today, Hungarians are shopping less often, but buying more when they do.
