Local Rakı Producers Lobbying For Special Status
January 2008 | Industry NewsThe Turkish alcoholic drinks industry continues to battle with issues of taxation, this time regarding the taxation of rakı, the national drink. The newly founded Traditional Alcoholic Drink Producers' Association (GİSDER) has argued that harmonizing with the EU for the taxation of distilled drinks such as Scotch whisky will harm the Turkish rakı industry. Instead, GISDER is lobbying for rakı to receive the status of a national drink exempt from the harmonized tax on distilled alcoholic drinks, similar to what has been granted to ouzo from Greece and rum from the coast of France.
