Tesco To Give Discounters A Run For Their Money

Tesco Polska, a subsidiary of the UK-based mass grocery retailer (MGR), has no plans to surrender market share to Poland's thriving discounters. Consumer confidence has fallen sharply as the country's economic outlook has weakened (BMI is forecasting GDP to contract by 1.2% in 2009) since the turn of the year. The supermarket and hypermarket segments have been losing market share to the country's discounters, namely Germany-based Lidl and domestic retailer Biedronka (owned by Portugal-based Jerónino-Martins).
