Coca-Cola Shuts Down Operations
March 2009 | Company News AlertEthiopia-based East African Bottling Share Company (EABSC), the domestic bottler of Coca-Cola products, has this week been forced to temporarily shut down its two plants and send its entire workforce on compulsory leave after it ran out of foreign currency to fund imported inputs, particularly bottle tops. Domestic bottle top producers simply do have the capacity to meet demand. The bottler, a subsidiary of South Africa-based Coca-Cola Sabco (CCS), has been present in Ethiopia since 1959. Its production capacity in 2008 was an estimated 21mn crates. In BMI's opinion, the unfortunate circumstances affecting EABSC reflect on Ethiopia's poor business environment
