Tough Year For Spirits Makers

Consumption of Vodka and Tuzemak (rum flavoured spirits) has almost doubled since 2004 according to the Czech Association of Spirits Producers. Led by the domestic trio of Stock Plzen-Bozkov, Granette and Fruko-Schulz, the spirits industry began to regain lost momentum after losing ground to the whizzing beer industry (spirits sales declined between 2000 and 2005). Despite the industry's resurgence up to 2008 in a country noted for being the world's highest per capita consumer of beer (estimated at 120 litres per annum), 2009 could be a cataclysmic year for the alcoholic drinks industry.
