EU Farmers Cause Further Disruption Over Milk Prices
May 2009 | Industry Trend AnalysisThe latest efforts by disgruntled EU dairy farmers to receive greater support from the union saw protests take place outside the EU headquarters in Brussels, while roadblocks in Berlin and similar scenes in France underlined the frustrations of famers. Such scenes have become increasingly common since the European Commission, led by Marianne Fischer-Boel, decided in November 2008 to incrementally raise production quotas, in line with plans to abolish quotas entirely by 2015, thus providing a freer market dynamic. Farmers feel these measures are largely to blame for dairy prices that have tanked in recent months as oversupply exerts strong downward
