Organic Milk Turns Sour For US Producers

According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), organic whole milk sales in the US were down 2.5% year-on-year (y-o-y) in February 2009, while y-o-y demand for organic reduced fat milk was even more reduced, at 15% down. This has proved particularly devastating for producers who have accrued notable amounts of credit debt in order to transform standard dairy farms into fully functioning organic units. The worst affected farmers are those who ran up debts as high as US$500,000 directly prior to the credit crisis, leaving them comparatively little time to recoup before the organic movement suffered in response
