Brazil's massive beef industry, the world's top exporter and second only to the US in terms of beef output volumes, is slowly yielding to the pressures exerted by donors and conservation groups regarding the destruction of the Amazon rainforest. Since the release of a comprehensive Greenpeace dossier, detailing the links between the export industry and deforestation, several of the country's beef retail outlets have refused to buy from producers in one Amazon state, while the World Bank reportedly withdrew a US$90mn loan to Brazil's largest beef exporter, Bertin, in an attempt to force the industry to cut the amount
