Room For MGR Growth In Promising Regional Market

Although Zambia's mass grocery retail industry (MGR) remains highly underdeveloped with traditional unorganised retail continuing to account for the vast majority of grocery retail sales, BMI believes it has fairly upbeat growth prospects. With a GDP per capita of US$1,224 in 2008 (BMI estimate) and a rising population - currently just over 12mn - Zambia is one of the most attractive markets for regional retailers seeking expansion. Through to 2018, we expect Zambia's GDP per capita to increase by almost 210% and reach US$3,155, providing significant impetus to the MGR industry as a higher proportion of consumers come into play,
