Mozambique Posts Strong Agricultural Growth
July 2009 | Industry Trend AnalysisMozambique has dramatically improved its capacity to produce rice, having posted a significant 37% year-on-year output surge from 190,000 tonnes in 2008 to 260,000 tonnes in the most recent harvest. The improvement has been largely attributed to state investments in the industry, as the government has ramped up efforts to reduce the country's reliance on rice imports to facilitate domestic consumption. While it would be easy to bask in the positive glow of the current harvest, however, Agriculture Minister Soares Nhaca recognises the need for such efforts to be maintained if his country is to edge nearer to food security.
