Food Producers Call For Easing Of Sugar Tariffs
August 2009 | Industry NewsFood manufacturers in the US have called on the government to increase the allowance for tariff free sugar imports after global sugar prices surged to a 28-year high. In a letter to Agriculture Secretary Thomas Vilsack, a consortium of manufacturers including Kraft Food, Hershey and Mars suggested that unless action was taken the industry could face a shortage of sugar and that companies could be forced to hike prices and lay off workers. The American Sugar Alliance has disputed the claims, suggesting that the US market is isolated from the rest of the world due to a system of quotas
