Rice Production Cut To Preserve Water
September 2009 | Industry Trend AnalysisThe Egyptian trade ministry has confirmed that the country plans to cut domestic rice production by 20% to 2mn tonnes in order to ease the burden on the country's already stretched water resources. With Egypt a net rice exporter and with the country's internal renewable water resources per capita standing at an incredibly low 24.3m³ per annum, the decision makes sense in terms of rice self-sufficiency and yet it has turned the spotlight back on to Egypt's wider food security
