Retail Sales Fall But Food Retailers Continue To Invest

The German Federal Statistics Office has reported that German retail sales fell by 1.5% month-on-month in august, a figure at odds with consensus expectations for a slight rise. Year-on-year sales were down by 2.6% and the result comes despite economic indicators suggesting that Germany has emerged quickly from recession. The figures suggest that household spending may remain weak even once the economy recovers, with heighted job insecurity still weighing on consumer sentiment.
