Shoprite To Enter Recovering Market By 2011

South Africa's leading grocery retailer, Shoprite, has announced that it is poised to enter the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) by 2011. The news comes as a massive boost to the DRC, which is currently staging something of a mining-led economic renaissance. With a population of more than 50mn and pockets of wealth in the main cities of Kinshasa and Lubumbashi, there is certainly an underserviced market for modern grocery retailing. Geographically, the expansion into the DRC is a logical step for Shoprite. The country is one of the few core sub-Saharan markets in which Shoprite is not yet present.
