Mercator Launches First Supermarket

Slovenian grocery retailer Mercator has officially entered Bulgaria after launching its first supermarket in the provincial city of Stara Zagora. The retailer's entry into Bulgaria strengthens its non-Slovenian presence to six markets with further plans to launch in Albania by year-end 2009 and Montenegro and Kosovo by 2012. Bulgaria's population of 7.5mn makes it a fairly large regional market and perhaps most importantly from Mercator's point of view, the organised grocery retail sector currently contributes less than 50% to overall grocery sales.
