Metro To Launch Over 20 Outlets In Middle East's Biggest Market

German wholesale giant Metro Group has announced plans to launch 12 outlets in Egypt by 2012 under its Makro banner in a groundbreaking move that is likely to spur on the transition from independent to organised retailing in the Middle East's most populous market (nearly 80mn). Over the long term, Metro is believed to have earmarked plans to launch over 20 outlets, which would make Egypt comfortably its largest Middle East region market. Taking into account that independents currently account for close to 70% of grocery retail sales, Egypt represents an indisputable long-term opportunity.
