Nestlé To Offer Fairtrade Kit Kat

Nestlé has announced plans to certify its Kit Kat chocolate brand as Fairtrade in the UK and Ireland. The changeover, which will begin in January 2010, follows rival confectionery firm Cadbury, which switched its Dairy Milk brand to Fairtrade chocolate in the summer of 2009. Cadbury's decision is one of the most important endorsements of the Fairtrade movement and clearly puts pressure on other producers to follow suit. However, BMI remains sceptical as to whether Fairtrade can offer real help to developing nations and we feel that these weaknesses may eventually undermine the appeal of the Fairtrade
