Mercator Enters Sixth Balkan Market

Slovenia's largest mass grocery retailer (MGR), Mercator, has launched its first hypermarket in Albania, taking its operating presence to seven markets, including Slovenia. Albania is by no means a large market - it has a population of just 3.1mn - but the underdeveloped state of its MGR industry bodes well for Mercator, particularly in light of BMI's upbeat headline macroeconomic forecast through to 2019. Over this forecast period, GDP growth is expected to average 5.5% and per capita output is set to strengthen almost one-and-a-half-times to US$7,200.
