French Cheese Giant Lactalis Pursuing Expansion

Leading French cheese producer Lactalis has confirmed that it is in negotiations to acquire Russia's Efremovski in an effort to enter the hard cheese segment. Present in Russia since 2002, Lactalis currently operates within the processed cheese segment. In BMI's opinion, a successful closure of the deal would represent a key strategic breakthrough. The hard cheese segment makes up the majority of cheese consumed in Russia and bearing in mind that per capita traditional cheese consumption in the country remains well below most states in Western and indeed Central Europe, significant room for value and volume growth remains.
