Champagne May Feel Long-Term Impact From Short-Term Price Cuts
January 2010 | Industry Trend AnalysisIn line with wider industry trends, drinks group Remy Cointreau and Champagne specialist Vranken Pommery Monopole have both seen their Champagne volumes drop sharply during the last year as a result of the economic slowdown. However, while Remy Cointreau's champagne sales slipped by 32.5% in the nine months to the end of September, Vranken Pommery registered a decline of only 6.5% for the 12 months to December. This difference can be attributed to the firms' opposing response to the downturn, with Vranken Pommery embracing a widespread price cutting trend but Remy Cointreau maintaining its pricing
