Carrefour MAF To Enter Re-Emerging Iraq

The Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region's leading hypermarket retailer Carrefour MAF - a joint venture between the France-based retail behemoth and the UAE-based property developer - is expected to launch its first store in Iraq in 2010. BMI believes the announcement underlines Iraq's ongoing re-emergence as a promising investment centre for regional food, drink and mass grocery retail (MGR) companies. A large market with a population of about 32mn, Iraq's severely underdeveloped formal retail market and subsequently weak internal trade systems make it an obvious play in our opinion, as Carrefour MAF continues to build up its MENA
