Industry Reforms To Increase Competitiveness
March 2010 | Industry Trend AnalysisSouth African Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries Minister Tina Joematt-Pettersson has announced that the country will revise several of its farming laws in order to make the industry more globally competitive in the face of increasing production costs and lower agricultural commodity prices. Specifically, she stated that the government will not return to pre-Apartheid farming subsidies and will instead opt for improvements in agricultural infrastructure. BMI believes that infrastructure improvements are a step in the right direction as the country maintains its moratorium on subsidies, which are an outdated concept that only serve to limit the efficiencies of established agricultural sectors
