Upbeat results from Australia's second-largest retailer Wesfarmers are very much in line with BMI's long-term view on Australia's retail prospects. BMI remains confident that the long-term fundamentals of the Australian retail sector remain robust on the back of Australia's favourable demographics and rising disposable incomes. However, over the near term, it is difficult to envisage similarly upbeat results for Wesfarmers owing to dampened consumer demand amid the country's secondary slowdown.
