Berli Jucker Emerges As The Frontrunner For Carrefour's SE Asian Operations

French mass grocery retailer (MGR) Carrefour has narrowed the field to three bidders for its Malaysian, Thai and Singaporean networks. The company is reportedly in a second round of bidding with Thai conglomerate Berli Jucker (BJC), Thai supermarket retailer Central Group and French retailer Casino Guichard-Perrachon SA. As we previously noted, Carrefour is seeking to divest its South East Asian operations as part of its long-held strategy of exiting markets in which it is not one of the top three players (see 'Carrefour To Divest South East Asian Operations?', July 6 2010). However, it is not yet clear as to whether these contenders will be acquiring the entire South East Asian operations or separate individual operations from the French retailer.
