German Organic Food Receives Boost After Dioxin Food Scandal, Long-Term Future Looks Strong

A food contamination scandal in Germany has led to a spike in demand for organic products, according to reports. In the first week of January 2011 it emerged that a German firm had supplied around 3,000 tonnes of fatty acids intended for industrial use to producers of animal feed. The error, which occurred at the tail end of 2010, has been linked to increased levels of dioxin, which can cause cancer, in a range of agricultural outputs, including poultry meat, eggs and pork.
