Upmarket Retailers Win Christmas But BMI Sees Value Coming Back Into Focus As Year Progresses
January 2011 | Industry Trend AnalysisThe performance of the leading UK food retailers over the important Christmas period sets a stall out for the forthcoming year and sheds some light on underlying retail trends. The Big winner was higher-end retailer J. Sainsbury, which registered like-for-like growth of 3.6% in the 14 weeks to January 8. In contrast lower-end operators Tesco and WM Morrison reported stagnant growth, with Tesco delivering like-for-like growth of just 0.6% in the eight weeks to January 8 and Morrison reporting growth of only 1% in the six weeks to January 2.
