With some of the highest alcohol taxes in the world, Scandinavian countries such as Finland have the most expensive alcohol in the European Union. When the Baltic States joined the EU and import limits were lifted, this spawned a trend in Scandinavia of crossing into these neighbouring states for the purpose of buying cheap alcohol, creating a boom in the Estonian alcohol sector.
