US meat producer Smithfield Foods remains optimistic that Romania's expected EU accession in January 2007 will see a major boost in consumption of domestic pork in the country. In a presentation to investors last week, Smithfield CEO C Larry Pope noted that currently Romania imports more than 50% of the meat it consumes, with much of these imports coming from outside of the EU. Accession is closing off these cheaper imports and the company is investing heavily in Romanian pork operations to grab market
