Recent reports have revealed that 2006 was the worst year since independence for Zimbabwe's agricultural sector, as the government's quick-fix solutions continued to be ineffective. Power blackouts, the late planting of summer and winter crops, the import of substandard fertiliser, and the seizure of farming implements by government officials have all wreaked havoc on the agricultural sector. Prior to the disastrous land reforms by President Mugabe in 2000, Zimbabwe was known as the breadbasket of southern Africa. Now, thousands, if not millions, of its citizens are on the brink of starvation.
