Lidl Moves Ahead With Romanian Expansion

According to reports in the local press, German group Lidl&Schwarz has decided to move forward with plans to open the Lidl discount retail chain in Romania. Lidl was initially supposed to start operations in Romania sometime during 2006, however, the company decided to delay expansions, apparently due to concerns about high land prices. Reportedly, Schwarz will spend EUR150mn (US$198.5mn) on opening as many as 100 stores by 2012. The company said that it had the change of heart due to the potential of the Romanian market, which it feels could allow for about 150 stores to be developed under
