Bahrain's BHD10mn (US$26.5mn) food subsidy scheme is under scrutiny, with the government reportedly considering abolishing the existing system in favour of a coupon scheme that favours the country's lowest income groups. However, the proposal has met with dissatisfaction among Bahrain's middle-income groups who argue that their needs are being ignored in pursuit of spending cuts that are not in fact even necessary.
