Kaufland Moves To Smaller Store Formats

Competition in the Czech mass grocery retail (MGR) market appears to be heating up even more, with hypermarket operator Kaufland announcing that it is moving into the smaller store format. Currently Kaufland runs a chain of around 80 hypermarkets, usually between 4,000 and 5,000m² in size, which operate in towns with a population of over 20,000. However, the company has decided to start building outlets in smaller towns, placing it in direct competition with those operators that currently dominate these smaller regions, namely Penny Market, Plus Discount and fellow Schwarz-offering Lidl.
