The price of spirits in the UK will increase markedly after the country's Chancellor of the Exchequer, Alistair Darling, imposed a 10% rise in excise rates. This decision will mean that a standard sized bottle of spirits will increase by around GBP0.55 (US$1.10), representing the first increase in duty on spirits for 10 years. The country's wine and beer industry got off slightly more lightly, with the cost of beer increasing by GBP0.04 (US$0.08) a pint and that of wine by GBP0.14 (US$0.28) a bottle.
