UAE-based mass grocery retailer (MGR) Al Maya has opened two supermarkets in Muscat, the capital city of Oman. The retailer expects to open a further five outlets by the end of 2009 as it bids to diversify away from the relatively clogged UAE market (it operates around 20 supermarkets in the UAE and has been present since 1982). Like most states in the Gulf Co-operation Council (GCC), Oman possesses an affluent consumer base (we estimate its GDP per capita to have been US$21,000) and a relatively small population (2.8mn).
